After growing in the past four years, Bangladesh’s apparel industry suffered some shocks when it lagged behind Vietnam as a sourcing destination last year.

This was mainly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the country's 3,500 garment factories were closed for up to two months and caused the industry to lose US$3.26 billion due to cancellation of orders, although most of them later recovered.

Faruque Hassan became the chairman of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in April and recently launched a charm offensive aimed at consolidating Bangladesh's position as a leading brand sourcing destination.
